Asus, the company who set the netbook market ablaze by offering consumers small laptops with cheap price tags attached is poised to release its own versions of digital readers, due out in just a couple of months. These Asus eBook readers are called the DR-570 and the DR-950.
Unveiled at the January Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Asus eBook readers stole the spotlight with their impressive specs and great looks. The Asus DR-950 offers a big 9″ display screen, 4GB of storage, has an USB port, an SD slot, Wi-fi capability and HDSPA. It also has a text-to-speech function that supports over two dozen languages as well as a browsers and both portrait and landscape modes. Also on board is a virtual keyboard and the ability to doodle and take notes. Throw in a dictionary that translates and you have a great package indeed! The DR-950 is only 0.35 inches thick and weighs in at less than one pound. The DR-950 will not support color.
The Asus DR-570 has a OLED screen that supports color and is said to have Flash Video on board, Wi-Fi capability and 3G connectivity. Page turns are very fast, it has an RSS reader, 4GB of memory and an audio and video player as well as a text to speech function. The DR-750 will be released after the debut of the DR-950. Users will get an amazing 122 hours of use per charge on the DR-750 and multiple formats are supported such as epub, PDF and avi. The DR-570 will make watching YouTube videos a pleasure and weighing in at just under one half of an ounce, this Asus is sure to make a big splash when it is released later this year.
These two Asus eBook readers are sure to shake things up in the rather new and fast growing electronics
category. With specs like this and low price tags, Kindle and Sony may have to re-think both what they are offering on their devices and the price tags attached. The two new Asus readers do not use e-ink technology but rather something that is called SiPix Microcup electronic paper which the team at Asus says is more energy efficient.
